Day 4 - Saco Pond, Willey House, Ripley Falls

Day 4 was a mellow day of several short hikes.

We started with the short loop around Saco Pond, just across the road from the Crawford Notch railroad station.

Pollywogs and pollywogs becoming frogs in the sunny water at the edge of Saco Pond. No doubt only a small fraction survive into adulthood, even in this rich environment.

The path takes a branch up onto the top of a short cliff, and from there you can an almost bonsai arrangement of water, trees, and the work of man; including the log bridge that connects to the rest of the loop.
The moon sets over the mountains behind the Willey House in Crawford Notch.

The author gets in a little bouldering off the pond loop trail that leads through the woods across from the Willey House.

A spectacular gash on the flanks of Mt Jackson.
Ripley Falls and its iron-rich water

Unfortunately, Sue took a fall on the trail and injured her ankle. We took a day off, drove a long loop, and visited some antique stores.
